This course provides an introduction to the geographical and historical processes that have shaped different world regions as we know them today. For the nine regions we will be discussing in this class, we will examine political, economic, and cultural trajectories that uniquely impact people and their environment. Rather than attempt the impossible task of covering all aspects of every region, I will emphasize one or two specific themes of interest for each region, i.e. economic unification in Europe and the AIDS crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa. The class also requires you to learn the names and locations of the places we are studying through a map quiz for each region. At the end of the course you should not only know where places are in the world, but understand some of the major issues affecting the people who live there. The knowledge gained in this course will allow you to understand and critically evaluate world news and current events, an important step in becoming a better world citizen.

Selected topics in Latin America's social, economic, and political geography. Emphasizes problems of regional development.
GEOG 430: Population Geography (3)
This course will provide students with a broad understanding of current trends in global population change. After an initial overview of changes in global population, we will focus on some of the topics that population geographers examine in depth – fertility, mortality, migration, resources and the environment, and urbanization. Our specific areas of focus will be on women’s reproductive rights, poverty and health, international migration, and urbanization in the developing world, using case studies to illustrate and understand the complexity of larger trends.
