Research Emphasis: Geography of Health and Population, Rural and Historical Geography

Specific Research Endeavors
My ongoing research is in the area of cartographic representation and modeling of regional and national mortality outcomes including the elimination of racial/ethnic disparities and the reduction of mortality burden over time.  Recently I have expanded my research to include areal interpolation techniques for mapping mortality rates to US congressional districts and delimiting medically fragile populations in storm surge zones created by hurricanes.

Secondary research foci include the study of spatial and temporal change in isolated rural elderly populations, the geography of health behaviors and risk, as well as the dynamics of historical epidemics, vaccination, and disease ecology.
