The Undergraduate
Certificate in Geographic Information Systems is a formal
academic program offered through the undergraduate college of Northern Illinois
University, culminating in the awarding of a “certificate.”
To receive the Undergraduate Certificate, you must be admitted
to the undergraduate college of Northern Illinois University. Undergraduate
certificates are NIU-specific programs and all credit hours required for
the certificate must be earned at Northern Illinois University. It may be
possible to substitute courses within the Certificate program based on prior
academic or professional experience; however no credit hours or courses
may be waived.
The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information
Analysis is a formal academic program offered through the
Graduate School of Northern Illinois University, culminating in the awarding
of a “certificate of graduate study”. To receive the Graduate
Certificate, you must be admitted to the Graduate School
of Northern Illinois University, either as a Student at-large or in a degree-granting
program. All credit hours required for the certificate must be earned at
Northern Illinois University.
If you have not
received a B.A./B.S. degree:

may begin the Undergraduate Certificate
in Geographic Information Systems by:
applying to Undergraduate Admissions. This application requires a high
school transcript, transcripts from all colleges or universities attended,
and an official record of test scores on the ACT or SAT. You may earn
the certificate without taking any other courses required by the University
for a Bachelors Degree.

If you have already
received a B.A./B.S. or advanced degree:

wish to pursue a graduate degree, you may begin the Graduate
Certificate in Geographic Information Analysis by applying
to the Graduate School as a Student at-large. This application requires
a final transcript from the college or university from which you earned
your bachelors degree and any subsequent degrees. There is no application
fee.
- and are thinking
about pursuing a graduate degree, you should apply to the Graduate
School for the specific graduate degree in which you are interested. This
application requires official transcripts from all colleges and universities
attended, an official record of test scores on the GRE, and an application
fee. You may pursue either the Graduate Certificate
in GIA or the Undergraduate
Certificate in GIS as a supplement to your graduate studies.

to earn the Undergraduate Certificate
in Geographic Information Systems, you should apply to Undergraduate
Admissions as a postgraduate. This application requires a final transcript
from the college or university from which you earned your bachelors degree
and any subsequent degrees. There is no application fee.
- Be sure to consult
with an advisor in the Department of Geography before registering for any
classes.
- you do not
have to be admitted into or declare any specific undergraduate major in
order to earn the Undergraduate Certificate in GIS. You simply need to be
admitted to NIU's undergraduate college and be in good academic standing.
- you can earn the Undergraduate
or Graduate Certificate as a part-time student. On-campus, the certificate
can be completed in as few as two semesters; off-campus, in as little as
a year.
